Verrucae are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which affects the outer layers of the skin. Because they are viral in nature, there is no single treatment that can simply “cut out” or permanently remove a verruca.
This is a common misunderstanding, but verrucae cannot be treated in the same way as a skin lesion or growth that can be surgically removed. Instead, the body’s immune system needs to recognise and clear the virus over time.
At the clinic, we focus on managing symptoms and supporting the healing process. This may include reducing painful hard skin around the verruca, helping to improve comfort when walking, and advising on suitable treatment options to support your body’s immune response.
For more detailed information about verrucae and how they develop, please refer to the verruca section in our blog, which explains the condition in more depth.
